Getting Revit onto your laptop involves more than downloading an installer. You need the right Autodesk account, approved educational access, a compatible computer and the templates that let you start a project.

This guide takes you through each stage, from requesting student access to saving your first Revit model. It also explains what to do when your institution is missing, Revit does not appear in your account, or the software opens without the content you expected.

Can students download Revit for free?

Eligible students can request free, renewable educational access through Autodesk. Start on the official Revit education page, confirm eligibility, select the required version, install it and sign in with the approved account. Educational access is for learning and educational work, not commercial projects. [1] [2]

About the images

These four screenshots were captured from Autodesk’s live website on 24 September 2026. They show the current public education workflow and Revit 2027 content documentation. Signed-in product selection and installer screens are not pictured. Click an image to enlarge it.

Before you download Revit

Check whether you qualify for student access

Autodesk education eligibility depends on your enrolment at a qualifying educational institution and its minimum-age requirements. A college email address alone does not establish eligibility. Autodesk may ask for evidence that you are currently studying. [2] [3]

Keep a current student document ready, along with the exact name of your institution. Use your own Autodesk account so that verification, product access and the eventual sign-in all connect to the same person.

Enrolling in a private training course, including an Augmintech course, does not automatically qualify you for an Autodesk Education plan. If you also attend an eligible college or university, apply using that enrolment. If you are not eligible, review Autodesk’s trial or commercial options for your intended use. [2]

Choose the version your class or project uses

Ask your instructor which Revit release the course files require before choosing the newest download. A class using Revit 2026 may need everyone to keep working in that release.

Revit can upgrade older models, but it cannot save a model back to an earlier Revit format. Opening and saving a shared course file in 2027 can therefore create a problem for someone using an older release. Work on a separate copy when testing an upgrade. [10]

Check the Revit 2027 system requirements

ItemOfficial baseline or guidanceWhat to check on your computer
Operating system64-bit Windows 11Open Settings → System → About.
ProcessorIntel or AMD processor with a base clock of 2 GHz or higherCheck the exact processor model.
Memory16 GB minimum; 32 GB in Autodesk’s balanced configurationLeave room for other applications and linked models.
GraphicsDirectX 11, Shader Model 5; 4 GB video memory recommended at entry levelCheck the GPU and its driver.
Disk space30 GB for installation; 100 GB free recommended for temporary filesCheck the system drive as well as the chosen installation drive.
ConnectivityInternet for registration and prerequisite downloadsUse a stable connection during setup.

These are Autodesk’s Revit 2027 requirements, not a promise that every model will run comfortably. Revit 2027 also requires .NET 10. See the full specification for advanced graphics, larger projects and virtual environments. [5]

Before installation, save your work, finish pending Windows updates and restart if requested. Keep your laptop connected to power. On a college-managed computer, ask the administrator to perform any installation step that requires administrator access.

How to download and install Revit with student access

STEP 01Open Autodesk’s Revit education page

Visit the official Revit education page. Use Request free access if you need to apply, or Access existing account if you already have access. The live page shown below uses Request free access.

Start from Autodesk rather than a third-party download site. An installer downloaded elsewhere cannot give your account an educational entitlement, even if it installs successfully.

Choose Request free access near the bottom right.

Checkpoint: you are requesting Revit through Autodesk’s education service.

STEP 02Select the Student subscription plan

After Request free access, the current Revit education flow opens subscription plans. Choose Select in the Student column. A message explains that continuing requires verification at a qualified institution; continue if that describes your situation.

Choose Select in the Student column.

STEP 03Complete your account information

The current application shows Product details, Customer details, Educational institution and Educational verification. Check that the product is Revit. In Customer details, enter and confirm the email you will use for Autodesk access. Read the displayed privacy information before proceeding.

If you already have an Autodesk account, sign in with it when prompted. Keep the application, software download and Revit sign-in connected to the same account. Confirming an email address is separate from establishing student eligibility.

Enter and confirm your email under Customer details. Continue through the institution and verification sections.

STEP 04Enter your institution and enrolment details

Select your country and institution type, then search for your school or college. Check the location carefully before selecting a result; similarly named institutions can appear together.

Enter your actual enrolment and expected graduation dates where requested, then review the information before confirming. Keep these consistent with the documents you may need to submit.

If the institution does not appear, follow Autodesk’s request to add it. Autodesk advises that institution validation can take seven days or more. Do not select an unrelated school just to proceed. [3]

STEP 05Complete student verification

If Autodesk asks for supporting documents, upload a readable document showing your name, institution and a date demonstrating current enrolment. Examples include a student ID, transcript or official school letter, provided it contains the required information.

Use one of the file formats accepted by the upload screen. Autodesk’s support example lists JPG, PDF, PNG and GIF. Check that the entire relevant document is visible and legible before uploading. [4]

Some applications need additional review. Check the account status and the email address used for the application. If more information is requested, respond to that request rather than repeatedly creating new accounts.

STEP 06Confirm access and select Revit

After approval, return to the education software catalogue and choose Revit. If a confirmation page offers Get Autodesk Software, that takes you back toward product selection.

Approval establishes your education eligibility; you still need to select the product and obtain access to it. If you already use AutoCAD through the Education plan, check Revit’s availability in the same account rather than assuming the AutoCAD installation also installed Revit.

Checkpoint: Revit is available through the approved account before you start troubleshooting the installer.

STEP 07Select the version, language and download method

In Autodesk Account, open All Products and Services and locate Revit. Select 2027 if that matches your course, then choose the available Windows platform and preferred language. Autodesk’s install workflow offers different methods depending on the product and account. [6]

Read the method before starting: Install combines downloading with installation, while Download separates those stages. Direct Download creates installation files without automatically including the latest updates. Keep all files belonging to a download together.

For Windows products from 2025 onward, Autodesk documents a Direct Download package containing an executable extractor and a .7z archive. If your Revit download uses this format, keep both in the same folder and run the executable. Do not try to launch the archive as the installer. [6]

If the page shows only a previous version, pause and check the available releases and your product access. Renaming an installer or choosing a different language will not change its Revit version.

STEP 08Run the installer and let setup finish

Start the downloaded Autodesk installer or extractor. Approve the Windows administrator prompt when appropriate. Review the product version, installation location and components offered, then begin installation.

Keep the download files in place until setup finishes. The installer may need to extract files, obtain prerequisites and install supporting components, so progress is not always uniform. If it reports an error, record the full message before closing the window.

Restart Windows if requested. Then check the available Revit updates in Autodesk Account or Autodesk Access. Installing the base application and installing its subsequent updates are separate tasks.

Checkpoint: Windows lists Autodesk Revit 2027 as installed, and the application launches.

Installing Revit is the first step toward learning BIM

For mechanical and electrical learners, the next step is understanding how services are modelled, documented and coordinated. Explore Augmintech’s BIM MEP program and review whether its learning path matches your goals.

STEP 09Sign in and confirm the licence

Open Revit and use the Autodesk ID sign-in option for your individual education account. Use the account approved earlier. Follow any browser-based authentication prompt and return to Revit when it completes. [7]

You should not need to search for a shared activation key. If Revit reports that no licence is available, check the account email and product entitlement first. Reinstalling the application does not fix an entitlement assigned to a different account.

A campus-managed network licence follows a different process. If you are using a college computer, follow the institution’s instructions rather than changing its licensing configuration.

Set up Revit templates and family libraries

Revit can launch successfully while still lacking the content your lesson expects. Understand the difference between the files before deciding that installation failed.

  • A project template, normally an .rte file, supplies a starting setup for a project.
  • A project, an .rvt file, stores the model you work on.
  • A loadable family, an .rfa file, supplies a reusable component such as a door or air terminal.
  • A family template, an .rft file, is a starting point for creating a family.

Check the project templates first

Start a new project and inspect the available templates. Choose the discipline and units your instructor specifies. A course may supply its own template; that is different from a missing Autodesk template.

If the expected template is not listed, check whether its file exists and browse to it. Where necessary, check File → Options → File Locations for the configured project template entries. Repair a missing path by pointing to the actual file, rather than typing a folder location copied from another computer.

Autodesk documents core template installation separately from additional content libraries. Use its missing-template guidance if the files themselves are absent. [8] [11]

Revit 2027 Help explains core content and the missing-template warning.

Image 4. Captured from Autodesk’s live website on 24 September 2026. Source [15]. Click to enlarge.

Obtain the family content your exercise needs

For downloadable content, return to the Revit product details in Autodesk Account and look under Available downloads → Libraries, using the current account controls. Choose the content package matching your Revit release and intended region or units. Avoid downloading unrelated libraries just to fill every folder.

Autodesk also provides Load Autodesk Family for accessing cloud content. Use this when you need suitable Autodesk content without first installing a complete local library. Internet access is needed. [8]

For an existing local family, use Load Family and browse to the .rfa file. Revit 2027 documentation lists the default library location as %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Autodesk\RVT 2027\Libraries. Your institution may use a different location. When loading while placing a category such as doors, select a family of that category. [12]

As a practical exercise, load one appropriate door into a small architectural model or one air terminal into a suitable MEP exercise. Confirm its units, dimensions and available types before using it more widely. Downloading a family does not establish that it is suitable for every design.

Create a small test project before starting your course

A successful launch checks only part of the setup. A small project helps you confirm that the template, modelling tools, views and save location work together.

  1. Create a new project from a suitable template. Choose a project, not a new project template.
  2. Check the project units before drawing. For a metric exercise, confirm that the dimensions are being interpreted as intended.
  3. For an architectural test, create a simple enclosed arrangement of walls and add one door. Follow your course’s starter exercise instead if you are using a specialised MEP template.
  4. Open a 3D view and check that the elements are visible.
  5. Save the project as an .rvt file in a folder where you have permission to write.
  6. Close and reopen that saved file to confirm you can continue working.

Give practice files clear names, such as Revit2027_First_Practice.rvt. Keep the original course files separately. This makes it easier to identify accidental upgrades or distinguish an instructor’s model from your own exercise.

Common Revit download and installation problems

“My verification is pending or was rejected.”

Read the specific reason in the verification email or account page. Compare the submitted name, institution and enrolment evidence. If the problem is an unreadable or out-of-date document, supply a clearer current document through the requested process. If the institution itself is under review, another installer download will not speed up that review.

“I am approved, but Revit is missing from my account.”

Check the signed-in email first. Then return to the education product catalogue and ensure you selected Revit after approval. If the product still does not appear, contact Autodesk education support with the account details and the status shown. Never include your password.

“The download finished, but installation will not start.”

Check whether all parts of the package are present, whether the browser reported a failed download and whether the executable has finished downloading. For a multipart Direct Download, keep the extractor and archive together. Retry through the official download method if a file is incomplete.

“The installer says there is not enough disk space.”

Check the Windows system drive even if you selected another drive for Revit. Extraction and temporary setup files can still require space there. Remove unneeded files through normal Windows storage tools, then retry. Do not delete unfamiliar Autodesk folders while an installer is running.

“Installation stops with an error.”

Record the error code, Revit version and the stage at which it fails. Finish pending restarts, confirm administrator access and look up that exact error in Autodesk support. Avoid repeated complete reinstalls without identifying the failure. On a managed laptop, involve IT if permissions or security controls are involved.

“Revit opens, but my template or family is missing.”

First identify whether you need an RTE project template or an RFA component. Check the file location, content release and units. A missing template entry, an uninstalled library and a family that simply has not been loaded into the project are three different problems.

“The model was saved in a later version of Revit.”

Check which release created the model. Use that release or a compatible later release, or request the original file in your course’s version. There is no native Revit Save As option that converts a newer model to an older release. An IFC export can support some exchange workflows, but it is not an equivalent editable replacement for every Revit feature. [10]

“My add-in worked in an older Revit version.”

Check the add-in publisher’s compatibility information and obtain the release intended for Revit 2027. Do not assume an older plugin remains compatible or manually copy its files into the new installation. If a problem occurs only after adding a plugin, tell its support team which Revit build and plugin version you use.

“Revit is installed, but it feels slow.”

Compare performance in your small test project with the course model. If only one model is slow, its size, links or view settings may be contributing. If every project is affected, check free storage, available memory, graphics drivers and background applications before assuming the installer is defective.

Renewal and the limits of student access

Educational access normally lasts one year and can be renewed while you remain eligible. Autodesk allows renewal within 30 days of expiry. Renew through the same account and complete any requested eligibility checks. Successful renewal does not require reinstalling the application. [9]

The free education route is intended for educational purposes. It is not a licence for paid freelance commissions or other commercial work. When you move from learning to professional delivery, check the appropriate commercial access with your employer or Autodesk. [2]

Frequently asked questions

Is Revit free for students?

Yes, eligible students can apply for Autodesk educational access. Approval and continued eligibility are required. A course purchase alone does not grant that access.

Is the student download a separate, simplified Revit application?

You access Revit through an educational entitlement. Choose Revit in the education catalogue and the release your course requires. The essential distinction is the permitted educational use, rather than a separate “student-only” modelling workflow.

Can I download Revit 2027 on a Mac?

Revit is a Windows application with no native macOS installer. Autodesk lists a Parallels-based configuration in its Revit 2027 requirements. Review that configuration, Windows licensing and your Mac’s hardware before proceeding. A Mac download for AutoCAD is not a Revit installer. [5]

Do I need a college email address?

Autodesk does not require a school email address in every case. You do need access to the email associated with your account and must meet its eligibility checks. A college address does not by itself prove current enrolment. [3]

How long does installation take?

There is no dependable single time for every laptop. Connection speed, storage, prerequisites and updates all affect it. Leave time to verify access, install content and open a test project before your first class.

Can I use Revit without an internet connection?

Plan for internet access during download, authentication and any online content loading. Do not assume an educational licence allows indefinite offline use; follow the account and licensing prompts shown by Autodesk.

What if I am not eligible for the Education plan?

Review the official Revit trial and commercial options. Autodesk describes its trials as typically 30 days; check the actual offer and permitted use before starting. A trial is separate from renewable student access. [13]

Should I uninstall an older Revit version first?

Do not remove a working version simply because you are downloading 2027. First confirm which release your existing projects, add-ins and classes require. Keep adequate storage available and use the appropriate installer for each release.

What should you learn after installing Revit?

Begin with levels, grids, views, units and basic elements. Then practise families, schedules, sheets and coordination using a small complete project. Learning why an element is modelled a certain way is more useful than memorising ribbon locations alone.

For MEP learners, connect modelling exercises with engineering decisions: where services run, how equipment connects and what information belongs in the model. Installation gets the tool ready; repeated project work develops the skill.
