What Skills Do MEP Employers Ask For? An Analysis of 100 Recent Job Advertisements

Most advice on MEP engineer skills is somebody's opinion. We read 100 live MEP job ads from India and the Gulf, line by line, and counted what employers actually wrote down. Some results confirm the usual advice. Several do not.

TL;DR

• AutoCAD is still the baseline: 60% of Indian ads and 49% of Gulf ads named it, more than any other tool.
• Revit is a strong second in India (40% of ads) but only 20% in the Gulf, where many roles are site-based.
• Estimation is the hidden universal skill: 36% of ads in both regions asked for BOQs, take-offs or cost estimates.

How We Collected and Analysed the Ads

We searched Indeed's India, UAE, Saudi, Qatar, Oman and Kuwait sites for MEP, HVAC, electrical, plumbing and fire fighting, and MEP BIM roles, then opened each ad and recorded only what it explicitly stated: software, technical tasks, codes, certifications, experience, degree and soft skills. Non-building roles (semiconductor, product design) and duplicate listings were excluded. Counts are the share of ads that mention each item at least once.

What Kinds of MEP Jobs Were Advertised?

The two markets advertise different jobs under the same "MEP Engineer" title. In India, 27 of 45 ads were design roles and 9 were BIM or drafting roles. In the Gulf, 21 of 55 were site execution roles, followed by 15 design roles and a long tail of procurement (4), estimation (4), QA/QC (3), planning (2), coordination (2) and maintenance (2).

Which Software Do MEP Employers Ask For?

AutoCAD appeared in 54 of 100 ads, nearly twice as often as Revit (29). That gap is widest in the Gulf, where many roles are on site and the drawing work is reviewing shop drawings rather than modelling. Revit is the clear second skill in India, where design offices and BIM service firms model for Indian, Middle Eastern, UK, US and Australian projects.

Specialist tools were named far less often than training brochures suggest: Navisworks in 8 ads, HAP in 4, TRACE in 3. Yet load calculations were asked for in 20 ads. Employers want the calculation; most do not specify the program. And 34 ads named no software at all, which is a reminder that software is rarely the deciding requirement.

What Technical Work Do MEP Job Ads Describe?

Two tasks cut across both markets almost equally: reading and reviewing drawings (36% India, 38% Gulf) and BOQ, take-off and estimation (36% in both). If you are choosing what to practise next, those two are the safest bets in the whole dataset.

What Do MEP Design Engineer Ads Ask For?

Filtering to the 42 design roles (27 India, 15 Gulf) sharpens the picture for anyone aiming at a design seat:

Two of the top three design requirements are calculations, not software. A design engineer who can do a heat load, size the ducts and pipes, select the equipment and price the result covers most of what these ads describe.

Codes, Authorities and Certifications

Gulf ads name the authority, not the textbook. 14 of 55 Gulf ads (25%) named a local authority or code, such as DEWA, Dubai Municipality, Civil Defence, SEWA, Trakhees, ADDC, PAHW or the Saudi Building Code. Indian ads more often named NBC and IS codes (13%) or foreign codes such as CIBSE, British Standards and US mechanical codes (16%), the latter in firms doing export design work.

• Engineer registration appeared in 9 Gulf ads (16%): Saudi Council of Engineers membership, Qatar UPDA, Dubai Municipality accreditation and Abu Dhabi ADQCC.
• A local driving licence was required or preferred in 7 Gulf ads (13%). None of the Indian ads mentioned one.
• Training certificates were named in 2 Indian ads: one asked for an HVAC design course certification, the other preferred a certification in electrical design.

Experience, Degrees and Local Exposure

Soft Skills: What Ads Ask for Beyond the Technical

Communication was the most requested skill of any kind, appearing in 50 of 100 ads (40% India, 58% Gulf), followed by coordination (32) and problem-solving (26). The sharpest regional difference was leadership: 12 Gulf ads (22%) and no Indian ads, which matches the Gulf's tilt toward supervising subcontractors on site. Written English was named explicitly in 10 ads, mostly in Indian firms delivering work to overseas clients.

Sources and Method Notes

• Primary data: 100 MEP job advertisements live on Indeed India, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman and Kuwait, collected and coded by Augmintech on 17 October 2026.
• Coding rule: an item counts only if the ad states it explicitly; nothing was inferred from job titles. Percentages use 45 Indian and 55 Gulf ads as denominators.
• Exclusions: non-building engineering roles, trade-only roles and duplicate listings. Five eligible ads could not be read during collection and are not included.
• Limitations: one job board, one day; search terms shape the discipline mix; salaries were not analysed because many ads omitted them or listed them inconsistently.
